News Flash: Google Becomes Video Platform Agnostic

A recent post on ReeSEO provided some great  information that should help video producers make better informed decisions about where to publish their content. In this post, Mark Robertson shows how he figured out Google’s recently implemented video indexing approach.

The conclusion of his post is that publishing one’s video on YouTube is not only going to give one great visibility on the second biggest SE in the world, it will now also help any website that’s embedding it be more visible on Google. Therefore Mark rightfully points out that any Video Hosting platform with the Unique Selling Proposition that embedding YouTube videos is not enough to rank one site’s on Google will now be out of business. Of course, most of these competing platforms have other selling propositions, as I mentioned in one of my earlier posts.

Needless to say, the news generated a lot of comments. For example, Kieran Farr, Vidcaster’s Founder, posted a detailed report of his findings showing that the new Google algorithm not only impacts YouTube videos but all other platforms using HTML5 as opposed to the dying Flash format (I recognize that I am comparing apples and oranges here, but I am summarizing a complex discussion!).

So this is good news for all, and it makes sense for Google too. Not giving preference to YouTube videos in their algorithms supports Google’s claim that their business is only about information relevancy. But this also poses interesting questions. Someone commented that one’s video could help another site outrank one’s site. And while this is indeed possible, wouldn’t this give your video, as well as others in your playlists, a greater chance of being viewed?

Finally, this recent development confirms the hypothesis I put forward in my previous post: Google and the other search engines will weed out Video SEO of the tricks that make it possible for poor video content and sites with little or no weight to rank very high on Search Engines. Videos that are shared on more blogs and social network pages will eventually beat all others. And sites that share better ranked videos will benefit as well.

Conclusion: I better start sharing more videos in my posts!
